Father chris riley

This portrait depicts Father Chris Riley AM, Salesian priest and founder of Youth Off The Streets, a charity that began in 1991 with a simple food van serving young people experiencing homelessness. From these modest beginnings, his work grew into a wide network of outreach, education, accommodation, and support services that transformed the lives of countless young people across New South Wales and beyond.

Despite the scale of his impact, Father Riley remained deeply humble. He consistently resisted recognition, choosing instead to focus on presence and action — meeting young people where they were, listening without judgement, and responding with practical care. He was known for working directly with young people on the streets and for quietly building pathways out of crisis. In the Southern Highlands, his commitment was also visible through the Youth Off The Streets op shop in Bowral, an everyday expression of his belief in dignity, opportunity, and community connection.

Father Riley sadly passed away last year. In painting this portrait, I did not seek to create an idealised or heroic image. Instead, I aimed to capture the humanity of a man whose strength lay in quiet resolve, warmth, and persistence. The paint handling is intentionally subdued, allowing the eyes to draw the viewer in and reflect the openness of Father Riley’s presence.

Although Father Riley did not want attention drawn to himself, this portrait is offered as an act of respect and gratitude, acknowledging the enduring influence of his compassion within the community he served.

This work resonates deeply with the story of Father Riley. Through this painting, I wanted to honour his unwavering compassion—seen not only in his work to guide young people off the streets, but also in the humble space of his Op Shop, where generosity takes shape in everyday gestures. These small acts—offering hope, belonging, and a second chance—create ripples that transform lives and strengthen communities. My work captures the enduring kindness that creates connection and healing that echoes far beyond one moment in time.
